In James Goldman's 1966 play, medieval English king Henry II and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, do brutal verbal combat over which of their sons will inherit the throne. Though this costume-drama variation on Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? crackles with sharp-edged dialogue, its sometimes contrived shifts from sly quips to histrionic rages require mature actors with finely tuned technique. In Evan Jackson's storefront staging for Idle Muse Theatre Company, Dave Skvarla has the gravitas and vocal range to make the aging Henry credible. But Elizabeth MacDougald is simply out of her depth in the complex, hugely demanding role of manipulative, imperious, yet vulnerable 60-something Eleanor. --Albert Williams
