Mystery, Thriller
Matthew McConaughey stars as a slick, heavily booked criminal defense attorney in LA, who operates out of the back of a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Continental. Most of his clients are probably guilty, and that includes the arrogant Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) who's been accused of sexual assault—and who may have committed an earlier crime for which a previous client (Michael Peña) went to jail. This pungent neo-noir can be sleazy and over-familiar, but like the protagonist, it's so smart and crafty that you may forgive its flaws. McConaughey, who's been languishing in mediocre romantic comedies, has a lot of fun with his part, and he’s surrounded by an excellent cast: Marisa Tomei as his ex-wife, William H. Macy as his private investigator, John Leguizamo as a bail bondsman, Josh Lucas as the opposing attorney, and Frances Fisher as Phillippe's indulgent mother. Brad Furman directed.
