The archetypal “prestige” picture, with a heavily made-up Paul Muni (that way you could tell he was acting) campaigning on behalf of the falsely accused Captain Dreyfus (Joseph Schildkraut). This act of altruism on behalf of the brothers Warner was rewarded with the best picture Oscar for 1937; it isn't so much bad as utterly, magisterially bland. With Gale Sondergaard, Gloria Holden, Donald Crisp, and Erin O'Brien Moore; William Dieterle directed. 116 min.
