Re-create a fantasy novel without benefit of pixels? That's just crazy. But by giving thoughtful attention to stagecraft and body language, adapter-director Ed Rutherford and his cast manage to limn the title unicorn, a butterfly, a cat, a talking skull, a towering bull. Promethean Theatre Ensemble's valiant, sometimes funny show is propelled by Rutherford's evident love for his source: Peter S. Beagle's episodic 1968 novel about what happens when the worlds of mythical creatures and human beings collide. But Rutherford's tenderness toward the material is a weakness as well as a strength. Apparently he couldn't bear to leave out Beagle's ponderous musings on mortality and immortality, youth and age, reality and fantasy. Dragging the show out to more than two hours, the philosophizing distracts from what might have been vigorous storytelling. --Laura Molzahn
