The Last Song

Years on the Hannah Montana TV series have not adequately prepared Miley Cyrus for screen acting, even in a vehicle as unchallenging as this adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel. As a talented pianist who resentfully leaves New York to visit her divorced dad (Greg Kinnear) in his southern coastal small town, Cyrus alternates between surliness and sarcasm before tumbling for a local teen heartthrob; at that point she's supposed to glow, but she fails to engage noticeably with the other actors. Director Julie Anne Robinson, making her feature debut, must have been chosen for her malleability, because there's nothing distinguished about her work here. With Kelly Preston.
