Mountaintop removal, a more profitable method of coal extraction, is increasing in Appalachia. For years the industry giant Massey Energy used tons of explosives to blast peaks in West Virginia's Coal River region and reach the coal beneath more quickly. But debris accumulated into dams trapping a toxic residue called slurry, deforestation increased flooding, heavy metals poisoned water supplies, and cancer rates rose alarmingly. This forceful expose shows how area residents are fighting to keep their beloved Coal Mountain pristine, but filmmaker Bill Haney allots too much screen time to environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and barely any to the urban consumers in distant states whose thirst for cheap electric power is part of the problem.
