Reminiscent of Tennessee Williams, this 1999 Indian drama centers on a petulant middle-aged woman (Kirron Kher) who lives out her days in a decaying villa, consumed by arrogance and sorrow. A film production company rents her place to use as a shooting location, and gradually she becomes interested in the cast and crew, particularly the charming and intense director. Kher is terrific as the protagonist, an annoying person who becomes more sympathetic as the story progresses. Rituparno Ghosh directed. In Bengali with subtitles; the original title is Bariwali. 150 min.
