In Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1951 musical, the king of Siam imports an English widow to help modernize his country--which she does by teaching his children English and leading him in a sexually charged polka. In lieu of an orchestra, director L. Walter Stearns puts two baby grands back to back, smack dab in the middle of Ian Zywica's simple but elegant black-and-bronze set. The lack of pretension gives this intriguing Porchlight Music Theatre production the feel of a chamber piece, turning it into a kind of Palace Confidential. That intimacy doesn't extend to the performances, though. As Anna and the king, Brianna Borger and Wayne Hu sing beautifully but generate zero chemistry. --Zac Thompson
