Cory Hinkle's hypnotic play unfolds onstage, onscreen, and perhaps in one adolescent's imagination. Seventeen-year-old firebrand Celia is either making a movie about assassinating the corporate executive she blames for her brother's death, or actually planning the crime. It's equal parts film noir and twisted sitcom. For roughly the first 85 minutes of Jackalope Theatre's world premiere, it seems director Kaiser Ahmed is completely off his game; the characters make little sense, the story's nearly impossible to follow, and much of the humor falls with a thud. Yet somehow it's fascinating. And in the final scene, when Hinkle reveals what's really going on, it's suddenly clear why all the preceding scenes had to be disasters. Then Ahmed's gutsy production delivers a grand payoff. —Justin Hayford
