The Kid: Chamaco | Chicago Reader

The Kid: Chamaco

An altruistic American doctor (Martin Sheen) and his semi-estranged palooka son (Kirk Harris) become unlikely mentors to a scrappy Mexican street fighter (Álex Perea) with a fire in his belly to become a champion prizefighter. Shot on location in Mexico City over four weeks, this naive indie production works best when it sticks closest to the canvas, but the overstuffed screenplay by Necoechea, Harris, and Carl Bessai has enough superfluous melodrama to power a thousand telenovelas: not only must our hero surmount his asthma and an abusive childhood, but he's fighting to free his sister (Danny Perea) and girlfriend (Sofia Espinosa) from their pimp and heroin dealer, respectively. In English and subtitled Spanish.
