Will Smith produced this remake of the 1984 hit as a vehicle for his son, Jaden. The willowy 12-year-old plays a Detroit boy who relocates to Beijing with his widowed mother (Taraji P. Henson); when he's bullied at school, he seeks out kung fu lessons from their moody building superintendent (Jackie Chan) and learns that self-defense is only part of becoming a man. This is a smart departure for Chan, who's been wasting his talent in mediocre comedies; the other actors don't fare as well. The plot takes forever to get rolling, and the movie is hamstrung by numerous tourism sequences (from the Forbidden City to the Great Wall) facilitated by the state-run China Film Group. Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) directed.
