The Interview

An unemployed mope is arrested on suspicion of murder and interrogated at length by two cops in this austere 1998 Australian film. The conflicts are overly familiar (is he guilty or innocent? will legal restrictions force the cops to release a killer?), but first-time director Craig Monahan maintains careful control over the script, imagery, and editing. Outlining most of his compositions in blacks and whites, bringing his camera to rest on the appropriate face at key moments, Monahan creates an elegantly constrained drama that focuses attention on the psychology of characters under pressure.
