Mark Bazer's guests are architect Jeanne Gang, novelist Kevin Guilfoile (The Thousand), burlesque dancer Michelle L'Amour, and WTTW's Fear No Art Chicago host Elysabeth Alfano. With music by the 1900s. 21+. The Thousand (Knopf), Kevin Guilfoile's recent follow-up to Cast of Shadows, introduces young, attractive Canada Gold, beneficiary of a neurostimulation device that gives her powers of sensory genius. This makes her a prime chess piece for warring factions of an ancient Pythagorean society, some of whom want to use her, some of whom want to kill her. Guilfoile's intimate prose works well in developing a large cast of characters that might otherwise seem overcrowded. Some passages have an air of existential introspection, as in an early aside: "For all the details Nada’s remarkable senses were able to track, the most salient aspect of the world she observed was that she was not in it." A local boy, Guilfoile also offers a familiar and humorous portrait of the Windy City, mostly through the eyes of a weathered south-side cop who loves his work, his booze, Mr. Beef, and Columbia College coeds half his age. —Sam Adams
