If you ask me, Everybody's Got It Easy but Me isn't a clever, tongue-in-cheek album title—in fact I'm pretty sure Intelligence front man Lars Finberg is actually bummed that you're better off than he is. Former drummer for the A Frames and currently one head of Thee Oh Sees' two-headed drum beast, Finberg plays guitar and sings in the Intelligence—and behind the mike he's always ready to spill his woe-is-me guts all over the band's jagged, idiosyncratic postpunk. On the new Everybody's Got It Easy (In the Red), for every "Hippy Provider" or "The Entertainer"—quick-hitting, Devo-tinged pogo numbers—Finberg busts out something chill and breezy, such as "Dim Limelights" or "Fidelity," the creaky, acoustic album closer, which nearly morphs into a rousing, angelic Jason Pierce-style outro. Started in 1999 as a lo-fi side project for Finberg, the Intelligence has blossomed into a real-deal band, thankfully hanging onto its early snarkiness in the process—for proof, see the new record's opening track, "I Like LA." —Kevin Warwick Coffin Pricks and Party Bat open.
