A sublimely happy man (Ulrich Thomsen), married to a vivacious actress and managing a successful Stockholm restaurant, begins to sell his soul after his father commits suicide and leaves the family steel business without a competent CEO. This 2003 Danish drama is essentially a Scandinavian remake of The Godfather—blond and repressed rather than dark and violent—in which the lines between finance and family, ambition and responsibility, gradually dissolve. Thomsen's transformation from easygoing entrepreneur to ruthless executive is so engrossing I didn't pick up on the story's chilling Freudian subtext until very near the end. Per Fly directed; with Lisa Werlinder and Ghita Norby. In Danish with subtitles. 107 min.
