Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Adapted from a story collection by Bret Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero, American Psycho), this repulsive 80s flashback centers on a dysfunctional Hollywood family (movie exec Billy Bob Thornton, pilled-up housewife Kim Basinger, and their two tan, blond teenagers), though its various subplots also encompass a dazed rock star who batters his groupies (Mel Raido) and a couple of lowlifes (Mickey Rourke, Brad Renfro) with a kidnapped ten-year-old tied up in their bathtub. Characters flaunt their wealth and use each other without remorse as they bounce around the upper tiers of the entertainment business, and the pall of exploitation hanging over the movie is only exacerbated by the casting: like the soundtrack tunes by Devo, Gary Numan, Men Without Hats, and A Flock of Seagulls, the actors (Rourke, Basinger, Winona Ryder, Chris Isaak) seem to have been chosen mainly for their 80s cash-in value. Gregor Jordan (Buffalo Soldiers) directed. R, 98 min.
