After graduating from the University of Southern California's film school, James Ivory hied himself to India, where he produced a number of archly European films: Shakespeare Wallah, Bombay Talkie, The Guru. This was his first (1963), the story of a young man trying to come to grips with marriage. Ivory's cultural schizophrenia is not as annoying as it would become later (in, say, Savages), but his direction is still strangely effete. For a self-styled humanist, he is a very cold filmmaker.
