Indian director Guru Dutt turned himself into a matinee idol with this 1953 swashbuckler about a prince and a village girl on the Malabar Coast leading an uprising against Portuguese colonizers in the 16th century. There's one delirious song-and-dance sequence in which the girl, bent on avenging her father's murder, commandeers a ship by exhorting the galley slaves to defy their European masters, but Dutt's main objective behind the camera seems to be glamorizing himself in front of it. With Geeta Bali; in Hindi with subtitles. 150 min.
