There's a thin line between what fascinates and what exasperates. David Hauptschein's portrait of a mental meltdown crosses it never to return. Is Wesley's psychosis fed by the not-so-normal creatures around him: his temperamental and ineffectual brother, a demented foreigner, a ditheringly maternal neighbor (delightfully played by Marssie Mencotti)? You may not care. Julio Maria Martino's slow-paced staging for Secret Life Theatre only draws out this maddening catalogue of peculiarities. Unlike beauty, madness isn't its own justification. This cluttered play is a closed system that punishes any attempt to penetrate it. --Lawrence Bommer
