Ignore the program and you'd never know director Yasen Peyankov's passionate production of this 1944 Tennessee Williams masterpiece is part of Steppenwolf's Young Adults series. Nothing is edited, simplified or sanitized--even the cigarette smoking stays in. And casting all African-American actors is no do-good social experiment but a natural means to illuminate the text. In following the fragile, working-class Wingfield family to poetic collapse, Peyankov's cast wisely play against their characters' manifest weaknesses, making their ruin all the more surprising and tragic. Shanesia Davis as failed matriarch Amanda and James T. Alfred as her misfit son Tom may seem more like roommates than family, but Nambi E. Kelley's shattering performance as Tom's self-negating sister Laura provides the necessary emotional punch. Her final act is devastating. --Justin Hayford
