Spanish director Carlos Saura's Buñuelian fantasy concerns a crippled, amnesiac industrialist whose relatives stage grotesque psychodramas from his childhood in order to unlock the secret of his Swiss bank account. The surrealism is academic at best, while Saura's engagement with his characters is sometimes questionable. Still, there are moments of superb whimsy and chilling austerity—as well as a jolly parody of Spanish values as all the members of the family end up in wheelchairs (1970).
