After working as extras on Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander, four residents of Uppsala, Sweden, go back to their unsatisfying lives. Most of Lucas Svensson's script (translated from Swedish by Chad Eric Bergman) has to do with David and Susann, a couple who’ve been unhappy ever since he returned from a revelatory trip to New York; we also meet an aspiring actor named Sven and his sensible mother, Nanny. The idea seems to be to imagine inner lives for people who would otherwise just be faces in a crowd, but Svensson's penchant for arty quirks makes the characters difficult to decipher. This chirpy staging from Akvavit Theatre benefits from the sense of repressed longing supplied by Bergen Anderson and Andrew Fortman as Susann and David. —Zac Thompson
