Larry Shue's cheeky 1983 farce focuses on what people do when real life gets "awful hard." Intensely shy Charlie Baker copes by posing as a non-English-speaking foreigner while staying at a lodge in Georgia. His dumb act makes him privy to the other guests' true confessions—including everything from an unplanned pregnancy to a property scam backed by the Ku Klux Klan—while transforming him, in Rod Armentrout's hilarious performance, from a bumbling introvert into a gregarious charmer. Alex Goodrich is electric as Ellard Simms, resident half-wit, who teaches Charlie English by pointing to objects and shouting their names at him. —Marissa Oberlander
