The characters in Will Eno's plays can hardly make a move before Eno stops the action to have them perseverate about grammatical minutiae or criticize the shaky status of theatrical realism. In his 2003 The Flu Season, this obsessive self-reflexivity gets the better of a story about two mental patients who fall in and then out of love. Eno's metaphysical reflections on the inadequacy of art occasionally yield flashes of insight, but more often they're merely exasperating. Jeremy Wechsler has directed a strikingly designed and fitfully moving production, but I felt for the actors: every time they try to have a genuine human interaction they're steamrolled by a playwright who's much too in love with his own cleverness. --Leon Hilton
