To the editors:

An Open Letter to Neil Elliott of Evanston:

We've just finished reading your letter to the editors of the Reader (1/15/88), wherein you advocated the "fist" method with regard to "Tot Control" (November 13 issue).

In actuality, we read the letter over and over and over again, because we could not believe that it was on the level.

People who equate love, guidance, and affection with punching are in serious need of professional help. A strong parent would nurture, protect, and teach his young; not bully them.

You think of yourself as a religious person. We suggest you start praying that your children get into a therapy program real quick, so that they won't propagate this dangerous, destructive mode of behavior for yet another generation. Otherwise, the next generation might not grow up to be "confident young adults"--they might not grow up at all.

We've never written a letter like this before. We just can't let you continue to believe that what you did is right, and that a closed fist could ever, ever--in a million years, even for a second--be considered a symbol of love.

We truly hope this letter will somehow, some way, make a difference to someone.
