Interracial power couple Patrick and Gaby are thrust into a media frenzy when an ugly racist incident from Patrick’s past threatens to scuttle his gubernatorial campaign, not to mention their marriage. Once Meredith Friedman’s 80-minute one-act gets going (it’s 20 minutes before any hint of trouble surfaces), its racially charged minefield often feels more cautionary than explosive—and the climactic meeting between Patrick and the African-American man he long-ago abused fizzles. Director Drew Martin’s savvy four-person cast make nearly every moment ring true, even when those moments feel theatrically expedient (a year into their marriage, Gaby just now questions whether Patrick married her to win black voters?). Still, this show from Stage Left Theatre is always interesting, despite attenuated plotting that too often keeps this firestorm on low smolder. —Justin Hayford
