A rugged Soviet officer (Alexei Guskov) returns home from World War II with a chestful of medals but discovers that his little daughter no longer remembers him, his owlish young son disapproves of him, and his wife is being cared for by an older neighbor who lost his own family in the carnage. Directed by Ivan Solovov, this 2007 Russian drama is a little too manicured to be entirely believable (its Red Army seems to have a remarkably high quotient of delicately beautiful young women), though the soldier's homecoming has some poignant moments. The family still loves him, but more as an idea than an actual person: asked to identify her father, the little girl points not to him but to a framed photograph of him taken before he left. In Russian with subtitles. 82 min.
