The Fast and the Furious

Investigating a series of daring truck heists on the LA freeways, a young FBI agent (Paul Walker) infiltrates a street-racing crew whose revered leader (Vin Diesel) is a prime suspect. The movie is a knowing throwback to those 50s exploitation flicks about angry teens and their fast cars; director Rob Cohen gamely tries to infuse a contemporary action picture with a vintage B-movie sensibility, yet his talent for first-rate action sequences is occasionally undercut by a lazy reliance on frenetic editing and bone-rattling sound. While few of the paper-thin characters register long enough to make much of an impression, Diesel carries the movie with his unsettling mix of Zen-like tranquillity and barely controlled rage. With Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Ted Levine.
