The Family That Preys

Tyler Perry dishes out another helping of overbaked family melodrama with this tale of two longtime friends—a wealthy industrialist (Kathy Bates) and a humble restaurant owner (Alfre Woodard)—struggling to save their respective families and businesses from their scheming children. The usual mawkishness is made slightly more palatable by the two leads and by Perry himself (not in drag this time but still sporting an awful wig), all of whom know how to chew scenery with style. For all the moral uplift and Christian values, Perry is a canny showman who understands the value of payback: the biggest roar of approval from the crowd I saw this with came when a long-suffering husband smacked his shrewish wife across the room.
