A thief named Tempest, sentenced by St. Peter to eternal damnation, refuses to go to hell—he rejects what he considers the afterlife's arbitrary system of justice. Meanwhile, an angel assumes the form of a mortal and learns that love hurts, human life is short, and heaven is silent. Welcome to earth. Though the theology of Walter Mosley's 2010 script (based on his novel The Tempest Tales) feels a little shaky, he makes a trenchant and ultimately moving argument for placing the rights of man at the center of the moral universe. In this Congo Square Theatre staging, director Daniel Bryant deftly blends the supernatural and the everyday, and Anthony Irons turns in a fierce, funny, fast-talking performance as Tempest. —Zac Thompson
