The Eternals, Wild Belle | Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park | Rock, Pop, Etc | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Mon., June 11, 6:30 p.m. 2012
Being a fan of the Eternals can often feel like an exercise in trust—you're never going to be able to predict what ringleaders Damon Locks and Wayne Montana are going to do next, but if you're willing to go along with it you're always going to end up in a satisfyingly strange and deeply funky place. After stripping down to a duo for their most recent album, Approaching the Energy Field (Addenda), the pair have recruited a number of fixtures on the local jazz, rock, and postrock scenes—including bassist Matt Lux, cellist Tomeka Reid, and vocalist Jeanine O'Toole from the 1900s—and expanded into a tentet that they've named the Eternals-Espiritu Zombi Group. (Espiritu Zombi is also the name of the suite of songs they'll perform here.) Montana wrote most of the material after a Brazilian tour, and though Locks says it's "hard to explain" the difference between it and their preceding work, he promises "more levels of colors and harmonies than you're used to getting from us." —Miles Raymer Wild Belle opens.
