First produced at Victory Gardens, this script by Chicagoan Joel Drake Johnson feels like an early draft of a better piece of work about a dysfunctional family dealing, more or less, with issues of aging, coming out, and abuse. All of the elements are there: clearly drawn characters, carefully mapped conflicts, a coherent story arc. But the play lacks passion or even dramatic tension. It would be easy to fault Cecilie Keenan's workman-like direction--and indeed, except for a few interesting stage pictures, her work is strictly paint-by-numbers. But her casting is good (though no one turns in anything better than a B-plus performance), and maybe paint-by-numbers is the best that can be done with this point-and-click text. --Jack Helbig
