Documentary
British filmmaker Rupert Murray (Unknown White Male) and journalist Charles Clover collaborated on this troubling adaptation of Clover's book about the world’s dwindling fish population. From Newfoundland, where overfishing eradicated cod, to Senegal, where foreign industrial trawlers force unemployed local fishermen to emigrate, to Tokyo, where endangered bluefin tuna are auctioned off to the sushi trade or to Mitsubishi (which maintains a private stockpile), they show how industry, government, and consumers are rapidly wiping out entire species. This is advocacy filmmaking at its finest, thoroughly researched and beautifully shot. In English and subtitled Spanish and Wolof. 83 min.
