Action, Thriller
Few movie stars can exhibit incredulity with the film they're in more charmingly than Richard Gere, and in this ridiculous spy thriller—about a former CIA man called out of retirement to track a Russian assassin—he has plenty to be incredulous about. Ineptly realized in everything but its chase scenes (which are, I'll admit, pretty good), the movie is rich in moments of inadvertent surrealism: a convicted killer swallows AA batteries in his prison cell; a Russian prostitute, living in a generations-old trailer park in Washington, DC, beats a Persian rug with a baseball bat; and an antique bookstore prominently displays a first edition of Stephen King's Needful Things. Michael Brandt directed a script he wrote with Derek Haas.
