Seventeen-year-old Beth (Judith Godreche) faces a harsh reality. Her listless mother sustains her and her younger brother with the financial help of a doctor who?s anxious to get at Beth. When Beth's manipulative, vain boyfriend provokes her, anger, youth, and an existentialist passion propel her into three seductions and a revenge scheme that show how the childish, the childlike, and the cynical are inextricably combined in her. There?s an almost uncannily powerful sense of Beth?s subjectivity in this urgent, philosophical drama (1990), which presents her as the object of other characters? desires as much as the possessor of her own. Written and directed by Benoit Jacquot (A Single Girl); with Marcel Bozonnet.
