The funniest thing about this 1971 Ken Russell camp epic is probably the juxtaposition of its first-class production values (a good cast, great set design, marvelous photography) with Russell's no-class sexual fantasies—it's like a David Lean remake of Pink Flamingos. Vanessa Redgrave plays the head of a 17th-century convent whose denizens are seized by a sadomasochistic frenzy; the bishop is sure that his nuns are possessed by the devil, so he sends in a funky, long-haired exorcist who looks remarkably like a Harvard graduate student of the era. With Oliver Reed, Dudley Sutton, and Max Adrian; adapted from John Whiting's play and Aldous Huxley's book The Devils of Loudun.
