Robert Hamer filmed this mystery-comedy, an adaptation of a G.K. Chesterton story, in 1954, when the British cinema was flush with superb character actors. Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood, Peter Finch, Cecil Parker, Sidney James, Bernard Lee, and Ernest Thesiger are showcased extremely well, though the film never breaks through to the cheery black tones of Hamer's masterwork in the genre, Kind Hearts and Coronets. Pleasant and forgettable, though Hamer at his best was much more.
