Emerging artist Brett Garry celebrates Asian dance and lifeThe Dance Series is a collection inspired by Indian and Indonesian culture It is a unique display of different positions mainly from the Odissi dance tradition contrasted with a photographic journal of her travels in India The exhibition is a celebration of ethnic diversity at the university NEIU has been ranked the most ethnically diverse university in the Midwest When I was a teenager I developed a deep interest for Indian and Indonesian dance sparked by a documentary I saw From this the direction of my work and studies were defined Brett recalls Using the medium of acrylic paint on a canvass I wanted to replicate the vantage point of an audience watching a performance I wished to capture a moment showing the dancers individual character working within the parameters of codified dance she describesThe set of photographs were taken during her recent visit to Kolkata India Brett comments on the photo One of 15 Billion The boy from a lower class is in a slum dwelling We do not know his identity his future or of his potential impact upon the world The photo conveys a sense of the unknown which is a daily feeling for many living in poverty Could his fortune change
