Rebecca Gilman's 2007 script dwells at great length and shallow depth on the baby question, as two Gen X couples and their baby boomer neighbors debate the merits of procreation from every self-centered angle imaginable. Will a kid take up too much of my time? Will I lose my identity? Do I just want to fit in? Nary a peep, though, about the human population explosion or the nearly half-million American children in foster homes. Such a marrowless, actionless play wants strong characters, but director Anish Jethmalani never quite gets his cast off the ground. Submerged tensions and jealousies are hinted at and abandoned, and the result feels incomplete and gangling. —Keith Griffith
