All the humor in this early Shakespeare comedy springs from one essentially flimsy gag: the mistaken identities of two sets of separated twins. Likewise, this production rides its own single gimmick ragged: two actors play all 16 characters in an abridged 50-minute adaptation. If the original was ever in danger of lacking confusion, the situation is remedied here, particularly in group scenes with half a dozen characters or more. Still, watching Elizabeth Rentfro and Wilhelm Peters juggle parts can be a goofy thrill, and the pair does an admirable job of keeping their lines and hammy accents straight. Their rapid-fire performances are physically impressive—a fine circus feat of sorts, if you don't mind getting just the one trick. Paul Cook directs. —Keith Griffith
