An open-mindedness in the plotting of this romantic comedy set on Ireland's Donegal coast adds a couple of mild surprises to the story about a bunch of men frustrated with the slim pickings in their tiny village. Viewers and the local women are hit over the head with boorish behavior as the men place an ad in a U.S. paper inviting American women, whom they've exoticized with the help of imported movies, to attend an annual dance. Some heterosexual stereotypes are called into question and a hackneyed comic device—a priest who speaks in sexual metaphors—becomes an integral part of the plot as the mostly expected love matches are forged. Aileen Ritchie directed a screenplay by William Ivory.
