Merchant-Ivory Productions suffered a blow in 2005 with the death of producer Ismail Merchant, but director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, the other two principals, soldiered on with this 2007 adaptation of a novel by Peter Cameron. Denied permission to write an authorized biography of a dead novelist, a midwestern academic (Omar Metwally) shows up at the man's Uruguayan retreat to lobby his chilly widow (Laura Linney), soulful mistress (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and duplicitous brother (Anthony Hopkins). The politics of this are fascinating, but they're gradually pushed into the background as the mistress falls for the visitor, he sustains a sudden injury, and his pushy fiancee from the States (Alexandra Maria Lara) arrives to join the party. As you'd expect from Merchant-Ivory, the script is intelligent and literate, though the saving grace of the movie is Linney's sardonic slow burn as the house fills up with unwelcome guests.
Director: James Ivory
Producer: Paul Bradley and Pierre Proner
Cast: Omar Metwally, Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexandra Lara, Norma Aleandro and Hiroyuki Sanada
