David Twohy scored a cult hit in 2000 with Pitch Black, a neat little hothouse drama about a motley crew of space travelers stranded on a planet with three suns; its nine-figure follow-up finds muscled antihero Vin Diesel battling a race of undead warriors called the Necromongers. The story here is more mechanical, but Twohy paces it well enough to showcase the spectacular costumes (by Ellen Mirojnick and Michael Dennison) and production design (by Holger Gross); especially cool are the Necromongers' neobaroque armor and architecture. In the end it's just another case of Hollywood's obesity epidemic, but if you're going to gorge yourself, better steak than hamburger. PG-13, 100 min.
