The Chicago Dancing Festival grows by leaps and bounds

Now in its fifth year, the amazing, exploding Chicago Dancing Festival is offering more shows and venues and a wider range of work than ever before. At the edgy end of the spectrum is Adam Barruch, performing his warped, highly kinetic solo take on "The Worst Pies in London" from Sweeney Todd (Tue 8/23, 7:30 PM, and Wed 8/24, noon, Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph, free "tickets" available for 8/24, waitlist only for 8/23). And at the old-school end: works by Martha Graham, whose 1958 Embattled Garden is part of the fest's "Masters" program (Thu 8/25, 7:30 PM, Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress, free tickets available). The fest's climactic, outdoor "Celebration of Dance" focuses on several classic troupes and dances, including Graham's namesake ensemble performing her 1948 Diversion of Angels and River North Dance Company in Charles Moulton's 9-Person Precision Ball Passing (Sat 8/27, 7:30 PM, Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph, no reservations required). Former high school athlete Moulton began setting his work for seated performers on different companies in 1979—and even on a group of 60 amateurs in 2007. RNDC's version—a company premiere, which can be seen on the 8/23 and 8/24 programs as well—promises to be more expert but no less fun. The fest schedule also includes a lecture/demonstration and a full day of dance movies.
