Just as the bubonic plague exposes long-established social repression in Peter Barnes's Red Noses, the Crusades bare medieval sexism in Howard Barker's The Castle. Nobles and their chattel return after seven years at the wars to find, well, not exactly Rosie the Riveter, let alone Lysistrata, but some disturbingly independent-minded wives and lovers. A castle, it seems, is built from testosterone as much as stone, but its towers can't withstand the power of lust. Barker's feminism is hard to value amid the strident, scatological, symbol-heavy fulminations of this convoluted drama. A triumph of earnest extremism, Ben Fuchsen and Justin Warren's rampaging staging uses shadow puppets and in-your-face acting to ram home a lot of maddeningly undeveloped arguments. --Lawrence Bommer
