The Cake Eaters

In this intimate 2007 drama, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays a rural high school student with Friedreich's ataxia, a terminal neurological disease, who targets the chef at her school cafeteria (Aaron Stanford) as the man to deflower her. The girl's grandmother (Elizabeth Ashley) encourages the budding romance until her longtime paramour, Stanford's father (Bruce Dern), suggests making their own union public. Jayce Bartok—who plays Stanford's irresponsible musician brother—wrote the screenplay, whose central story of doomed young love gets lost amid the overplotting. That's too bad, because first-time director Mary Stuart Masterson catches the rhythms of small-town life, and her cinematographer brother Peter makes upstate New York look idyllic. 86 min.
