Playwright Clint Sheffer sure has stuffed a lot of words into this spitfire of a 45-minute one-act. His language is spicy and slick—a refreshing jumble of midwestern twang, techno jargon, and the bewitching tone of a Grimm's fairy tale. The play is set in a Gary, Indiana, funeral home sometime way in the future, when every verbal exchange is crusted over with corporate slogans and vague, Orwellian threats. Having just lost their father, thirtysomething PD LeDuc and his sister Shasta learn that the home has been bequeathed to their stepmother, Candy, a dystopian valley girl whose face tan doesn't match her arm tan. Alarmed, the LeDuc siblings seek help from the bugaboo—a portal in the basement through which spirits with unfinished business can emerge briefly, adopt a host form, and communicate news from "the cave place" beyond. Sheffer's dizzying array of influences only enriches his tale of mortality, family, and slime-eating ghouls. It's offered here in a production by Bruised Orange Theater Company, as part of Rhinofest. —Hannah Gold
