The Brandon Teena Story

Hate may have been as much a rationalization as a motive for a December 1993 rape in Falls City, Nebraska. The victim, Brandon Teena, a female who presented herself as male, was murdered later that month in a triple homicide. Two men who confessed to the rape have since been convicted of the murders, and in Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir's frightening documentary they seem to speak as frankly as they can without jeopardizing an appeal. Other remarkably candid interviewees in this thorough, intelligent movie--which complicates the idea of hate crime without subverting it--include several women who had sexual relationships with Brandon discussing their perceptions of their lover's gender. Music Box, Friday through Thursday, March 5 through 11. --Lisa Alspector
