Without leaving his bed, a quadriplegic author and criminologist tracks a sadist—who seems to be a forensics expert too—through the recesses of New York City. Assisting him is a cop who used to be a model, which is supposed to make her competence and resourcefulness ironic. Their relationship—dramatized with earnest bad dialogue as often as persuasive wordless close-ups—is reductive: he patronizes her and she bristles. Yet this mild thriller's consistently dark atmosphere makes the scene-of-the-crime tableaux, whose strength is strangely dependent on their repetitiveness, transcend exploitation and even suggest a kind of feminist odyssey. Phillip Noyce directed a screenplay by Jeremy Iacone, based on a novel by Jeffery Deaver; with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie.
