One of the lesser products of Val Lewton's years as the head of RKO's horror-film unit, this 1945 film is based on a Robert Louis Stevenson story of a doctor who's blackmailed by the grave robber he employs to get subjects for his clandestine research. Robert Wise's direction is no more accomplished here than in The Sound of Music or any of his later big-budget projects, but Boris Karloff in the title role is surprisingly subtle—at times. Bela Lugosi costars.
